This policy explains what information Speaky ("we," "our," "the app") collects when you use the Speaky IELTS Speaking practice app, how we use it, and the choices you have. Speaky is built to work mostly on your device — this policy is written to match that, not a generic template.
The short version: your practice recordings stay on your phone by default. The only time a recording leaves your device is when you actively choose to spend tokens on AI evaluation or transcription — that one recording is sent through our server to OpenAI to generate a transcript and score, and is not stored afterwards by us or by OpenAI. The other things that touch our servers are the question bank (public content, not personal data) and, if you create an account, your email and token balance.
1. Information we collect
Account information (only if you sign up). Speaky can be used without an account. If you create one, we collect the email, password, and optional first/last name you provide, handled through our authentication provider (Supabase Auth).
Device identifier. Signed-in accounts are linked to one device at a time. We store a device identifier against your account so we can detect when the account is used on a new device and keep sessions to a single device.
Token balance & purchase data. We store your token balance and purchase records (which package you bought, when), managed via our billing partner (RevenueCat) and the Apple App Store.
Your audio recordings. When you record a practice answer, that audio file is saved to your device's local storage. It stays there and is never transmitted anywhere unless you tap to evaluate or transcribe that specific answer.
AI evaluation & transcription data. If you spend tokens to evaluate or transcribe an answer, that recording is sent to our server, which forwards it to OpenAI's Whisper API to produce a text transcript, and (for evaluations) sends that transcript to OpenAI's GPT-4o mini to produce IELTS band scores and written feedback. OpenAI processes this data to generate the response and, per its API data usage policy, does not use it to train models and retains it only briefly for abuse monitoring. Neither we nor Supabase store the audio, the transcript, or the score server-side — the result is sent back to your device and saved in your local recording history, the same way the rest of your progress is.
Practice progress (streaks, topics covered, favorites). This is stored locally on your device, the same way your recordings are.
Microphone & notification permissions. Speaky asks for microphone access to record your spoken answers, and notification access if you turn on daily/weekly practice reminders. Both are used only for the feature you enabled them for.
We do not use third-party advertising or analytics tracking SDKs in Speaky.
2. How we use information
- To create and secure your account, and keep it to one active device.
- To sync the question bank (Part 1, 2 & 3 topics and cue cards) to your device so the app works offline.
- To track your token balance and apply it to the features you spend tokens on.
- To transcribe and score the specific recordings you choose to spend tokens on, via OpenAI.
- To send you practice reminders, if you've turned them on.
- To respond to support requests you send us.
3. Where your data lives
Account, token balance, and purchase data is stored with our backend provider, Supabase, protected by row-level security so each account can only ever read its own data. Your recordings and local practice progress are stored using your phone's own file system. When you request AI evaluation or transcription, that one recording passes through our server and OpenAI's API to produce a result, but is not persisted by either — it is not stored in Supabase or on any Speaky server.
4. Third parties we rely on
- Supabase — authentication and database hosting for accounts, token balances, and the (public, non-personal) question bank.
- OpenAI — processes the specific recordings you choose to evaluate or transcribe (Whisper for transcription, GPT-4o mini for scoring). Only used when you actively trigger these features; not used to train OpenAI's models.
- RevenueCat & the Apple App Store — process token purchases. We never see or store your payment card details.
5. Data retention & deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Settings inside the app. This permanently removes your profile and token balance records from our database. Because recordings and local progress live only on your device, uninstalling the app or clearing its storage removes them as well.
6. Children's privacy
Speaky is an IELTS exam-preparation tool intended for teens and adults preparing to take the test. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to ask how it's used. You can exercise any of these by deleting your account in-app, or by contacting us below.
8. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
